In 1991 the mayor of the village asked from some expatriates
inhabitants of the village to organise an Association of Expatriates
and Friends of Apliki. Some of them loved the idea.
The first meeting of the Association took place on 13 April
1991 and at 11:30. The participants were: Andreas Georgiou
and Nikos Koliantris (members of the Local Authority), Christakis
Ioannou, Charalambos Hadjiparaskeva and Doros Theodorou (expatriates).
They exchanged points of view and they decided to meet again
on 27th April of the same year.
Thus, the Association was officially founded and its main
goal was the cooperation between them for the improvement of
the community and the refinement of the relationship between
the inhabitants and the expatriates. They also decided to cooperate
with the Local Authorities, the priest of the community and
the government for the development and the growth of the village.
The Association is also responsible for the organization of
several events such as lectures, cultural or music events and
balls. The committee of the Association is composed of: Christakis
Ioannou, Fanos papoulas, Takis Solonos, Charalambos Hadjiparaskevas
and Eirinoulla Andreou.
The first ball of the village was organized on 31st August
of the same year and everyone had a great time. The dancing
group of Apliki performed a show which was amazing and surprised
everyone. The teacher is Andreas Odysseos.
In 1993 the Association was registered as a society according
to the law 5/72 after a petition in the Ministry of the Interior.
The same year, the society became a member of the Regional
Union of Expatriates Association of Pitsilia. The president
represents the Association in all the meetings.
The most important activity of the Association is the organization
of the Annual Ball in the village, in the end of August, or
in the first days of September. During the Ball of 2000, the
Association honored the inhabitants of the village who were
born before 1.1.1930 in the Old Apliki and also the mayor of
the village for his the great help he offered to the village.
The Association has contributed economically (1.600 Cypriot
Pounds) to the ecclesiastical Committee of the village for
the restoration of the church of Agios Georgios, in the Old
Apliki.
Later on, they paid for the wall painting of the Presentation
of Christ in the Temple which was in the church of Agios Riginos
and Agios Orestis. The cost for the wall painting was 800 Cypriot
Pounds. They have also helped the Local Authorities (1.350
pounds) for the purchase of festoons, power mower, electricity
supply in the plaza of the village etc.
The Association has also supported many inhabitants and expatriates
who had serious problems. In 2004 the Association has replaced
the old psalters with new graven psalters. The new ones cost
3.000 pounds.
The Expatriates Association schedules to install central heating
in the church of the village, to buy furniture for the old
school (which will be the new Cultural Center) and also to
publish a book about the village.
